What are underlying influences affecting children that aren’t being talked about enough today? The theme for Momentous Institute’s 2019 Changing the Odds Conference is Hidden Factors. Our lineup of internationally-recognized keynote speakers will illuminate topics like inequity, foster care, trauma, addiction and other hidden factors. Austin Channing Brown is a leading voice on racial justice and the author of “I’m Still Here—Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness.” Since receiving her masters degree in Social Justice, Austin has worked with churches, universities and nonprofits across the country to advance the work of reconciliation. Through her expertise, we will explore the intersections of racial justice, faith and black womanhood.
Ashley Rhodes Courter, the extraordinary author of international bestseller “Three Little Words,” will share her powerful story of growing up in multiple foster homes starting at the age of three until she was adopted at age 12, shedding light on the challenges children face in the foster care system.
James Forman, Jr. is a former public defender and leading critic of mass incarceration and its disproportionate impact on people of color. He is the founder of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., an alternative school for dropouts and youth who had previously been arrested. Forman is also a best-selling, Pulitzer prize winning author and law professor at his alma mater, Yale University.
Maria Teresa Kumar is the founding President and CEO of Voto Latino, a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that she created with actress Rosario Dawson that works to engage, educate and empower Latinos to be agents of change. Come hear her story as she illuminates for Latinos’ innate leadership across all political ideologies.
Fredi Lajvardi is a nationally recognized STEM educator who is excited to teach us about the need to embrace diversity and invest in people. He will walk us through his experience of leading a group of high school students facing insurmountable odds to a national championship in underwater robotics.
Lisa Ling is an award-winning journalist, author and television host will enlighten us to the Hidden Factors she has uncovered across many cultures through her gifts of investigation and storytelling.
Howard Stevenson is a clinical psychologist, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and renowned author whose work on emotional and racial literacy in families and youth will offer insight into how we can confront encounters of racial trauma.
Jean Twenge is a professor of psychology at San Diego State University and author who will walk us through her research, which takes a look at 11 million young people and their time spent with technology. Jean will show us how to better relate to younger generations.
PLUS! Momentous Institute's Brenda Ortega, Anthony Castro, Dr. Meroudjie Denis and Gaby Satarino join Salesmanship Club of Dallas members Rick Gump and Ruben Esquivel to share how they have addressed hidden factors in their work with children and families at Momentous Institute.

What is the cost of the conference?

The registration cost will begin at $500 through May 31 and will increase through the start of the conference. • March 9 - May 31: $500 • June 1 - August 31: $600 • September 1 - October 24: $695

Are there CEUs for this event?

Momentous Institute is a licensed provider of CEUs in the state of Texas for LPC, LMFT, and LCSW. Participants will receive 13 hours of CEU credits for the two-day conference.
