After careful consideration, Momentous Institute will postpone its 9th annual Changing the Odds conference to October 28-29, 2021. The conference theme – Flourishing – will continue as planned with thought leaders and attendees exploring how social emotional learning, racial healing and the arts contribute to strong schools and communities. Originally slated speakers will remain in the lineup, including Cheryl Strayed, Jon Batiste, Vanessa Rodriguez and Dena Simmons. Momentous Institute looks forward to seeing educators, administrators, decision makers, mental health professionals and all those who are committed to children receiving equitable opportunities to reach their full potential.

Jon Batiste is a renowned musician, educator and television personality who balances many roles, including bandleader with the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Artistic Director at Large of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Jon received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in piano from the Julliard School and will share the impact of music on our well-being.
Christina D. Bethell, PhD, MBA, MPH is a professor at Johns Hopkins University where she promotes a new “Science of Thriving” to promote the social, emotional and relational roots of well-being. Dr. Bethell will show us how mindfulness and mind-body practices are key public health strategies in addressing trauma.
Dr. Gail Christopher, D.N. is known for her pioneering work as leader of the Healing Initiative and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation efforts. She is the former Senior Advisor and Vice President of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is ready to show us how health and diversity must be prioritized in the public sector.
Ingrid Fetell Lee is the author of “Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness” and founder of The Aesthetics of Joy. Ingrid will use her background in design to teach us about the influence of our surroundings on our emotions and well-being.
Dr. Rodriguez is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Early Childhood Health and Development within the NYU School of Medicine. She is passionate about the study of teachers and currently researches the social emotional development of educators and their students. Come hear Dr. Rodriguez speak on how humans develop their natural ability to teach.
Dena Simmons, Ed.D., is the Assistant Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of the forthcoming book, “White Rules for Black People.” Come ready to hear her share what it looks like to have emotionally intelligent and safe classrooms within the context of equity.
Cheryl Strayed is most notably the author of the #1 New York Times best-selling memoir “Wild,” which subsequently became an Oscar-nominated film adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. Known for many other works that have been profiled in the New York Times, Vogue and elsewhere, Cheryl will walk us through her powerful story of flourishing.
