About the Event

Momentous Institute is excited to bring “Diversity in 2016: Lessons from society, current events and the therapy room” presented by Momentous staff psychologists Jessica Gomez, Ph.D. and Matthew Leahy, Ph.D.

Diversity is a broad, ever changing topic…. especially for mental health providers. This interactive seminar is designed to be a conversation between moderators and attendees surrounding diversity issues at the forefront of the new year. We hope to shed new light on diversity issues that often fly “under the radar” and deserve our attention.

Four areas to be discussed are:

  • Transgender Youth
  • LGB youth and associated family issues
  • Refugees/first generation/immigrant children
  • Hidden Identities

Each topic will be discussed via lecture, media clips, and case examples. Audience members will be asked to engage in small group exercises that will then be processed by the larger group for further discussion and understanding.

Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn about current issues associated with transgender youth, including mental health risks, media issues, biological family factors, and medical transition.
  • Attendees will learn about current trends/issues in LGB youth, including risk factors associated with technology and growth/challenges with mainstream views.
  • Attendees will learn about current issues with refugees and families torn apart by immigration problems and how to navigate these realities in clinical situations.
  • Attendees will learn about kinds of diversity that are invisible and often surprising and how this applies to the clinician and client.
