APA Doctoral Internships

The APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship at Momentous Institute offers an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Grounded in the belief that knowing our own assumptions, guiding principles and cultural influences ultimately leads to professional growth and change, we strive to create a learning environment that encourages and challenges.

Why Momentous Institute?

First received accreditation from the American Psychological Association in 2000. The next APA site visit will take place in 2024.
We focus on the acquisition of specific competencies of advanced clinical skills and professional identity, strongly guided by the ability to cultivate a posture of self-reflection.
Opportunities to develop skills in individual, group, family, and play therapy with children, adolescents, and adults.
An emphasis is placed on providing linguistically and trauma-informed psychological assessments, expanding caregivers’ understanding of a child’s strengths and needs. We focus on telling the child’s story through the assessment rather than solely making a diagnosis.
Spanish-speaking students wishing to develop clinical competencies in Spanish receive supervision from bi-lingual supervisors focused on developing this important skill.

-         3 letters of reference, at least 2 from individuals who have supervised your counseling/clinical work
-         De-identified integrated psychological assessment report (child assessment is preferred)
All application materials should be uploaded through the APPIC portal using the APPI system.
Applicants will be invited for an interview no earlier than Friday, December 4, 2023 and no later than Friday, December 15, 2023.

Our 2024 interview dates are January 4^th, 9^th, 10^th, 17^th, 18^th, and 23^rd and will be scheduled in 90-minute blocks.
The internship is housed in our community mental health services department; however, interns often have many opportunities to gain experience at the Momentous School. During the training year, interns will conduct comprehensive psychological assessments for students at our school. Historically, interns have also run school groups for different grade levels and provided consultation for Momentous school teachers.
While we welcome students from school psychology backgrounds, please note that the structure of our internship cannot guarantee the required hours needed in a school setting for LSSP licensure. Students wishing to seek this specific licensure should consult with the licensure board for the state they intend to practice to determine how our program aligns with necessary licensure requirements.
At Momentous, we hope to provide generalist training that equips our interns to work with an array of presenting concerns and with individuals from across the developmental spectrum. Thus, we do not offer specific tracks/rotations within our program. However, we guarantee that our interns will gain experience in family therapy, child assessment, and in clinical practice with children, teens, and adults.
Additionally, our internship program requires participation in at least 1 group experience during the training year. Typically, interns participate in Huddle Up, our teen program, Forward Thinkers, our middle childhood program, or Launch, our early childhood program. We also have many other group programs that interns may opt to participate in throughout the year (e.g., Nature-Based Therapy, Parent Education, school groups).

Practicum Trainings

Momentous Institute offers practicum training opportunities for graduate students pursuing degrees in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and/or social work.

Master's Level Practicum

Students receive training in one of our two intensive group therapy programs, Huddle Up or Launch, and are also provided opportunities to develop skills in individual and family therapy with children, adolescents, and families.

Momentous Institute offers yearlong practicum training for students pursuing doctoral degrees in psychology. The program provides exposure to various opportunities including individual and family, assessments, and intensive therapeutic group programs with children, adolescents, and families.

Our Master's level placement is housed in one of our two intensive therapeutic programs, Huddle Up (adolescents/families) and Launch (pre-school). Huddle Up, is a therapeutic afterschool program serving youth ages 11 to 15 years old and their families. Launch, is an early childhood therapeutic program that serves children ages 3-5 years.
Students also have an opportunity for three/five individual/family cases.
We review cover letters and resumes starting in February for the summer placement, June for the Fall placement and October for the Spring placement.
We request that students stay with us for a minimum of 30 weeks in order to fully benefit from the learning opportunities we offer.
