As you start the new year, take a moment to imagine the kind of classroom environment you hope to create for you and your students. How can you turn that vision into reality? One way to help get you there is by setting up clear expectations from the very beginning.
Expectations are the set of guides for how students and teachers will show up in the classroom. Clear expectations set the stage for learning and healthy relationships throughout the year. Shared expectations, where both students and adults co-create the classroom norms, help create a sense of belonging in the classroom.
Like all of us, students perform better when they clearly understand what’s expected of them. It also helps when they have a voice in shaping those expectations, as opposed to simply being given a set of guidelines to follow. When students help define the rules, they feel more invested in following them, and when they feel their voices are valued, they’re more likely to be engaged. Shared expectations also help reduce anxiety and uncertainty, making students feel safe and supported in the classroom.
When everyone is clear about what their responsibilities are, it creates a stronger classroom community. That’s why we’ve put together a plan to help you co-create expectations with your students. In this lesson, you'll reflect on your best school experiences and use those insights to build a set of classroom expectations together.
