Anxiety is a very common emotion in young children… and adults, too. Sometimes the easiest way to normalize and talk about a complex emotion is through stories. That’s why we like these two children’s books that can help kids navigate their anxieties and worries, one for younger kids and one for older kids.

For Younger Kids:

First Day Critter Jitters by Jory John, illustrated by Liz Climo

This book is a classic first-day-of-school anxiety book, but with a fun twist. When the bus full of nervous animals arrive at school, they discover their teacher is nervous, too! This book shows kids that everyone gets worried sometimes, and helps them learn how to support each other through their jitters.

For Older Kids:

The Worry (Less) Book, written and illustrated by Rachel Brian

The tagline for this book is: Feel Strong, Find Calm and Tame Your Anxiety. This graphic novel talks directly to older children about their anxiety – how it is perfectly normal, how it affects our brains and bodies, and what we can do about it. This book has science and practical strategies in a big kid-friendly style.
