Our Momentous School librarian is up to date on all the latest books, and while there are so many great books out there, she has four new books that you might not find yet on the latest book lists.

Here are four new books (all published in 2021 or 2022) that can help encourage social emotional conversations with kids.

For how to turn any book into a social emotional lesson, check out this post.

My Heart Flies Open, written and illustrated by Omileye Achikeobi-Lewis

This is a beautifully illustrated picture book about yoga, meditation and self-love featuring a Black girl demonstrating various poses and affirmations.

We Give Thanks by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier

This book is a sweet, singsong rhyming book about the many things we all have to be thankful for in a day. The book does end in a meal, but isn’t explicitly about Thanksgiving and could be a great read aloud year round.

The Longest Storm, written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino

This is truly a book of our times, about a single dad and his three children managing being stuck in the home together for an extended amount of time. Without naming it explicitly, it tells the story of so many families who quarantined together during Covid and had to learn how to manage conflict and support each other.

Our Table, written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds

This beautiful book tells the story of a child who longs for the old days, when her family used to sit around the table… before they were busy and distracted by life and technology. As the story goes on, the table gets smaller and disappears, and it’s up to Violet to bring the family back together. The illustrations pair perfectly with the story – images of Violet are monochrome, and it’s only once the family is back together that it comes into full color.
