It’s much easier for us to notice the negative than the positive. As Rick Hanson, Ph.D. tells us, our brain has evolved to be like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive experiences. Our brain needs some training to zero in on all of the positive things around us.

 

One activity that can help is as simple as taking a walk with a child. Take your time, and don’t have a firm destination or timeline in mind. Just wander and notice the beauty around you. Have the child point out anything that makes her smile.

 

You can keep a list of all the things she points out. You can have her illustrate her list, and you can add to it any time you take another walk. Paying attention to the positive is a great way to help a child become more optimistic.
