Family Flag

A family flag can help identify values and help children have a stronger sense of self. Read on…

Activities, Caregivers, Parenting, Social Emotional Health

Children who are rooted in their family’s values and culture have a stronger sense of self, and ultimately make better decisions. Connecting children to their families helps them learn about what it is important and what matters most.

Explain that a flag is made up of symbols. For example, the U.S. flag has 50 stars for the 50 states, and 13 stripes to represent the 13 original colonies. You can show other flags from around the world to explain the diversity of symbols.

As a family, create your own flag. (You can assign this as a family project by sending a note home to parents.) Use your own symbols to represent what is most important in your family and decorate your flag. Be sure to create a symbol key that explains what each element on the flag represents!
