The natural world is full of examples of grit. Flowers growing through cracks in pavement, caterpillars cocooning as they transform into butterflies, a plant growing in a seemingly barren desert. Grit is everywhere in nature, and we can use nature to help children understand how, like nature, we can keep going and find a way when faced with obstacles or challenges.
Children often overlook the examples that nature provides. Next time there is a bright, sunny day, lead them on a brief nature walk. This experience will give them the opportunity to see how many living things demonstrate grit.
Early on the walk, point out a few things in nature that show grit. Here are a few examples:
Once the children understand what they are looking for, let them explore. Have them draw the things they find on the ‘Grit in Nature’ worksheet.
Going on a grit nature walk is not only a great way to help kids witness grit in the wild, but it is also an excellent way to get them engaged with nature. Spending time in nature has been shown to improve mental health. So, not only are kids learning about a valuable skill, but they are boosting their mental health as well.
