School movie nights are easy, free, and fun ways to bring the school community together. And we have an idea that can take your school movie night to the next level!
Try this:
Step One
Pick the movie Inside Out 2. It’s full of important lessons about the role of emotions, the way our emotions change over time, and what it’s like when our emotions take over. It lends itself to amazing conversations with kids.
Step Two
Set up a craft station. Gather pipe cleaners in a variety of colors that align to the emotions in the movie:
You can narrow these down to the top 5-6 but try to include a mix of emotions that kids will most likely relate to. (We recommend keeping joy, embarrassment, sadness and anxiety!)
Make small signs with the name and picture of the character. (You can find downloads online or make your own.)
Place the pipe cleaner for each color in front of the corresponding sign.
Step Three
Encourage students and families to select a color (or more than one) that represents how they feel now, or an emotion they have had in the past. They select the pipe cleaner(s) and twist the ends into a bracelet.
Step Four
Engage in conversation! Here are a few things you can discuss as students make their bracelets.
That’s it! We love this simple activity that is a big hit with kids and encourages healthy important conversation about emotions. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes at your school!
