When children interact with nature, they gain access to beauty that can’t be replaced elsewhere. They also benefit from invaluable lessons and insight.
One benefit of nature is the built-in opportunity for reflection. Nature lends itself to reflection and awe, because it is a respite from the distractions of daily life. Stepping outdoors allows us to literally step away from screens and step into large expansive spaces.
A simple way to aid in the process of reflection is to provide tools that allow children to focus on the beauty of nature. One easy tool? The classic hula hoop.
Try this: take a child or a group of children outdoors to an open space. Provide each with a hula hoop and have them (carefully) toss it. Wherever it lands, the child should walk over and take a seat. Set a timer for several minutes, and ask the child to look carefully at everything within the circle of the hoop. What do they see? What different colors are found in this space? What shapes? What small details might they have missed if they had just walked past? Have children record their observations on this activity worksheet.
This activity helps kids notice the smallest delights that nature provides and encourages them to slow down and take in the sights throughout their lives.
