Have you ever told a teen to put their phone down only to be met with an eye roll or a look of disdain? Adults tell teens to do a lot of things, often without giving a reason. Sometimes, there isn't a reason other than: "Because I said so", but when it comes to putting down the phone, that isn't the case.
There are a few things that happen in the brain when we use our phones that make it necessary that we develop healthy habits around phone usage. The Your Brain on Tech workbook combines information and activities to explain to teens what happens in the brain when they use their phones. The workbook highlights information about dopamine, the reward system and stress responses. It also includes several activities that allow teens to process the information they are learning and reflect on how they use their devices.
