We love this idea from the wonderful mindfulness book,"Sitting Still Like a Frog". Have a child take a moment to determine her own personal weather report. Ask her, “How are you feeling right now? What is the weather inside you like? Do you feel calm and relaxed like a sunny spring day? Do you feel anxious and overwhelmed like a stormy day? Are you sad like a gloomy overcast day?”

Once she identifies the feeling, just let it be. Much like we can’t control the weather outside, sometimes we just need to take time to sit with the feelings that we have. As long as kids know that their feelings come and go, we don’t need to get to work immediately to change our feelings. We can just accept that feelings are like a weather report, and sometimes we have good, sunny days, and sometimes we have to wait out a storm.
